The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

He has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club pursue future success.

Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
