The Gory Cartoon Movie Conclusion That Haunts Viewers
Out of all the adult-oriented animated films I’ve personally viewed, nothing has stuck with me quite like the dread-soaked ending of the viscerally violent and highly provocative 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, this Spanish filmmaker developed a dark, melancholy , frequently brutal universe that included a few small , desolate hints of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from a desire to expand animation even more, the director clarified that it was actually an effort to express a universal, multicultural theme regarding “the shared root of all wars.”
That idea is expressed through a group of colorful pastel bears , openly inspired by a well-known series of lovable characters.
Growing up in a community focused on militarism as well as the defense industry, a lot of the bears are fixated on slaughtering unicorns, because of a religious scripture which states the bears they were once kings of the forest, before the horned beings drove them out.
Others did not entirely fallen for the indoctrination, , prefer to experiment with drugs and mate outdoors.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these colorful critters show sexual organs , obvious urges.
For one particularly cruel, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns becomes a road to power — and particularly to dominance over his softer, kinder brother Tubby.
The character behaves aggressively and a seeming sociopath , and while fear takes over his unit and kills his fellow soldiers individually, he takes progressively control for himself, in increasingly gory, harmful methods.
At the same time, the horned creatures are experiencing their own horror, in the form of an expanding, destructive monster in their woods.
“In the early stages, it feels like a humorous movie,” the director commented. “However it evolves into a more serious and sad movie. And by the end, it’s a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars starts out similar to one of the most whimsical movies by a renowned animator, which find a mischievous joy in permitting drawn beings swear, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Then it becomes more akin to a darker work from that artist, with increasingly graphic violence , a noticeable relation to the actual suffering of battle.
Ultimately, it is an outright Grand Guignol carnage.
The terror which makes this an ideal spooky-season watch starts a lot earlier than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is one for the most dedicated fans of gore, for lovers of extreme cinema who want to view a film they have not watched previously, and who can handle a narrative which delivers absolutely no punches.
See it with the lights off free from interruptions, and that ending will burrow into your mind and take up residence there.
