The Golden State is Completely Drought-Free for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.
After a quarter-century span, not a single part of the state is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement follows challenging years marked by below-average rain that worsened fire dangers and challenged its enormous farming industry.
An Update Reveals An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas
The latest assessment from the national drought tracker showed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from multiple above-normal rainfall that replenished major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a local meteorologist.
From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays
The journey here featured severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in 2023, leading to extensive inundation, electrical failures, and deaths. Even though those events began to alleviate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Until late December, regions like Modoc County were considered experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 eliminated those remaining dry spots.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Remains a Concern
But, hydrologists note that being out of drought does not mean complete water security. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is only about 70% of the historical norm.
This frozen reservoir, which supplies approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it runs off, is a key piece for the year ahead. State experts stress that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.
“The current pattern right now is more rain than snow,” said a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Even as the official status indicates no dryness, the focus now shifts to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health for the months to come.
