Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard admits.
An Unexpected Return for Fallon Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer vividly recalls the exact moment he got the news from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are in some way still living in a bizarre shared situation. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
