Russian President Vladimir Putin Assures Steady Energy Supplies to India in Defiance of Washington Demands

Amid a unambiguous statement to the West, President Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “continuous” shipments of energy resources to India. This declaration came during a summit where both heads of state met in Delhi and asserted their partnership were “resilient to foreign coercion.”

A Message Aimed at the West

Putin's comments, issued after the annual summit, appeared to be targeted at the United States and its allies, that have sought to urge New Delhi into curtailing its longstanding ties with Moscow. The backdrop comes after previous Washington's moves, including the imposition of import duties on India due to its purchase of discounted Russian crude.

“Russia is a dependable source of fuel and anything needed for the growth of India’s economy,” Putin remarked. “Moscow stands willing to continue securing the uninterrupted delivery of energy for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, without referencing crude directly, supported the focus by saying that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and important pillar of the India-Russia alliance.”

Questioning US Interference

Before the summit, in a TV appearance, Putin had criticized US interference on India's energy purchases. He argued, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our uranium, why shouldn’t India have the identical right?”

Putin's arrival marked his first journey to India since the onset of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations made a clear effort to project that the personal rapport between the men remained intact.

Taking an rare move, Prime Minister Modi personally greeted Putin right off the plane. They embraced warmly akin to longtime companions before holding a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

The official release stressed an agreement on the joint production of advanced weapons platforms, although specific reference of purchases such as the fifth-generation aircraft were left out.
