Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
