Jailhouse Surprise: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He contested the legal system and the law won.

Two months subsequent to receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” Brazil’s democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now seems jail-bound.

Expected Jailing

The convicted instigator – who has been under residential detention in his estate while a set of legal procedures and challenges proceed – is largely predicted to be jailed in the near future, during mounting speculation that he will be sent to a infamous top-security facility.

Previous Remarks on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the right-wing ex- military man showed minimal mercy for the country's jailed individuals.

“Why should we give these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be screwed, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to end up there, you simply need is not rape, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Facility Speculation

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified backers, a group of four this week inspected the prison in an seeming bid to discourage the supreme court from banishing him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, claimed he predicted the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal issues – the consequence of a almost deadly knife attack during the 2018 presidential election race – implied it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His health is extremely serious. He will not be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he added, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells holding four dozen inmates: “That’s virtually one square metre per detainee.

“We conversed to the inmates and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the awful cuisine,” added the senator.

Allies Speak Out

He is not the only voice speaking out prior to the one-time head of state's expected detention.

Writing in a major daily, one more backer, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest wrong in its history”.

“This is an wrong that gnaws the spirits of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Public Opinion

This could be true given the significant following Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. But his predicted jailing has also pleased the hearts of many others who think he deserves to be jailed for conspiring to stop the incoming president from taking power – and even scheming to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a representative for the sitting administration's Workers’ party, commented: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We wish him to obtain dignified handling – but dignified handling in prison. He can’t carry on being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time praising the harsh handling of prisoners, had suddenly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the extreme right – which has repeatedly argued that basic rights are not for offenders – decided to visit a penitentiary to learn what conditions are actually like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, insulting treatment”.

Potential Prison Conditions

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently houses about thousands of inmates, his more likely assigned facility appears to be a nearby penitentiary for officers and other “particular” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning official residence, around 12 miles away.

As per sources, the cell Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – roughly the area of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 square meter WC with a shower and a 130 square foot balcony. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a TV and also a cooler in his quarters as long as they were donated by his family,” information stated.

Ideological Comments

Senator Lucas denounced the rumoured proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s legal case and will rule on his fate in the {
