England to Start the European Championship 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
The English squad will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected entry for a championship hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.
City’s stadium has not hosted an English men’s fixture since May 2016, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to welcome the England side for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.
England are set to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would take place at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean starting the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Championship Kickoff and Rally
The tournament was unveiled at an event in central London on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were barracked as they entered the site by around fifty activists, who urged the Israeli team to be kicked out from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were held up with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Schedule
The first match of Euro 2028 will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will involve Wales if they secure a place.
Wembley will host both semi-finals and the championship match, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to households and help connect with a more diverse set of fans.
Host Nations
The Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would follow suit at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will participate in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Venues and Elimination Phase
The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight played at each country’s national stadium.
The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.
Official Statement
“The event will be a competition for the fans and a festival of everything we value about the sport – its fervor and capacity to unite individuals.”
Over 3 million tickets, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be made available to supporters.
