Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at Nigerian School

Security breach at learning center
Schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The criminal group stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, according to a statement.

One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Community members informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in recent months, with schools bearing the brunt of the conflict.
