Condemnation Explodes as Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Rebuke
Figures from across the political divide and the entertainment world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Post
After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to describe the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Police Developments and Detention
Police have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
This is a disgusting and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. Goldberg pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly dared members in his party to defend the statements.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of a different political figure.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
