Wealthy businessman Isaacman has been voted in as the incoming leader of NASA, ending an extraordinary nomination process where President Donald Trump nominated him, pulled the nomination, and then renominated him.

The billionaire, an aviation enthusiast who was the first private citizen to conduct a spacewalk, is also the first agency head in a generation to come directly from outside government.

For many, the success of his tenure will be determined by one crucial test: whether it can land people to the Moon ahead of the Chinese space program.

The President has stated explicitly a ambition for the US to create a lasting moon outpost, both to facilitate harvesting materials and to serve as a stepping stone for travel to the Red Planet.

Legislative Approval and Nomination Drama

On This week, the U.S. Senate confirmed Isaacman's nomination with a decisive vote.

The President initially pulled the nomination in the spring, pointing to a "deep dive of past connections".

At the time, the president was engaged in a dispute with Elon Musk, one of his biggest supporters, with whom the nominee has a working relationship.

Isaacman has stated he is now completely supportive of the administration's goal to harvest the moon, placing him in disagreement with Elon Musk, who has said that lunar missions is a detour from the goal of travelling to Mars.

Vision for NASA

In the present global space race, countries are racing to exploit the lunar surface.

“This is not the time for inaction but a time for decisive steps because if we fall behind, if we err, we may never catch up, and the consequences could change the balance of power here on Earth,” he told US Senators earlier this month.

The business leader sees introducing more commercial rivalry as essential for meeting those goals, according to a circulated document outlining his plan for NASA.

In his testimony, he stood by the blueprint, which he drafted when he was originally put forward, but said it was a developing document.

His openness to multiple providers could also create a conflict with Musk. Last week, Isaacman applauded the granting of a lucrative deal to Blue Origin, which is one of the few rivals of Musk's SpaceX.

In the strategy paper, he suggested NASA should expand collaboration with universities and academic institutions, casting the agency as a "amplifier for research".

He cited the planned 2027 launch of the Roman Telescope as a cornerstone project.

"And if we be on the verge of something extraordinary - like launching Roman - I will leave no stone unturned to get the program to the pad, even using my own resources if that's what it requires to deliver the scientific results," he stated.

Wealth and Career

According to reports, his fortune is estimated at around $1.2bn, primarily derived from his financial services firm and the divestment of his business that trained pilots and managed a collection of military aircraft.

The position of agency chief will be his first job in government service, a break from the immediate predecessors appointed as head of the agency.

He will replace Sean Duffy, who has been the temporary leader since the summer.
